“We’ve created an easy to use 3-D home design software package for the whole market,” says Paul Condon, Marketing Director of MyVirtualHome.
“Only large projects could afford this before, but with MyVirtualHome we open the 3-D world to everybody.
“You can see what your renovation, extension or floor plan is going to look like in real life, because MyVirtualHome is also a 3-D catalogue. So you can place that wide-screen TV in your loungeroom, see what the paint will look like on the walls and with the carpet you’ve chosen. Also, how the colours will look with your lighting, and the sunlight through your windows based on the direction your property faces.”
The software is genuinely easy to use, thanks to simple controls that have their roots in games software. The Australian Government supported the all-Australian development of MyVirtualHome to the tune of a $2.49 million grant. The company has also recently been voted one of Australia’s ‘Coolest 10’ by Australian Anthill Magazine.
“Manufacturers are now seeing the benefit of being MyVirtualHome compatible,” says Condon. “Imagine being able to showcase your product in 3-D to millions of people on the day of launch.”
Ultimately MyVirtualHome will be a highly specific search engine as well: “you’ll be able to click on an item and find a tradesman in your area, a supplier or manufacturer. You’ll also be able to get a quote; just give the person your MyVirtualHome details and they can open the plan in 3-D. They don’t have to drive over there.”
The potential for the building industry, tourism industry, real estate and service industries seem limitless.
“You could ‘walk’ around a resort and see the room before you book your holiday,” Condon explains. “In fact, someone called MyVirtualHome a ‘Trojan House’, because it’s just packed with ways it can work, and it’s going to keep getting bigger and bigger.”
However not everything can be done in virtual time, particularly with a start-up business. “Over the past five years I’ve often flown between Sydney (where I live) and head office in Brisbane every week,” Condon admits.
“Initially we chose Virgin Blue because we were watching every penny. But it’s the culture of Virgin Blue that keeps me flying with them. They’re youthful, energetic and really efficient – even the way they fill the plane and deboarding is quicker.” Naturally he uses the web to book and check-in. “I usually arrive just in time to board,” he laughs. “We’re all in a hurry! And passengers notice things like efficiency.”
